The Altoona Rail Kings were a low-level professional baseball team that began play in 1996, amidst the “independent” baseball boom that saw non-Major League affiliated leagues and teams sprout up all across the United States. The team played two summers at Veterans Field in 1996 and 1997 before getting displaced by the impending arrival of a Pittsburgh Pirates Class AAA farm club, the Altoona Curve, set to begin play in 1998. The Rail Kings moved away to Huntington, West Virginia in 1998 and went out of business soon thereafter.

The Dubois County Dragons were a southern Indiana indepenent baseball team that played seven seasons between 1996 and 2002. The Dragons played in the Heartland League from 1996 to 1998 and then jumped to the Frontier League in 1999. Following the 2002 season, the team moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Cook County Cheetahs

The Cook County Cheetahs were a low-level independent pro baseball team in Crestwood, Illinois, a southern suburb of Chicago.  The team’s origins trace back to the Will County (IL) Claws (1995) of the obscure North Central League, who were later renamed the Will County Cheetahs (1996-1997). New ownership group re-branded the team as the Windy City Thunderbolts prior to the 2004 season, bringing the Cheetahs era to an end.
