Background

The Los Angeles Wolves defeated the Washington Whips 6-5 in sudden death over time on July 14th, 1967 to capture the USA’s only championship match. The contest was witnessed by an announced crowd of 17,824 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

In January 1968 the United States Soccer Football Association (USSFA) voted to formally approve the merger of the USA and the NPSL. The new merged organization was dubbed the North American Soccer League (NASL).

The USA’s Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Washington clubs all joined the NASL. But by 1969, every franchise that began play in the USA in 1967 was out of business save for one. Lamar Hunt’s Dallas Tornado club went on to play fourteen seasons in the NASL. The Tornado finally went out of business in September 1981, extinguishing the last link to the old United Soccer Association.

  1. The 1st game was June 4,1967. I was there playing the bagpipes to welcome the team from Aberdeen, Scotland. I have a very rare program of the opening game in DC , featuring the Washington Whips vs. the Chicago Mustangs.
