New Jersey Red Dogs

This long-gone Arena Football League entry was notable mainly for its celebrity ownership and and its naming rights agreement with a briefly popular beer of the late 1990’s, Miller Brewing Company’s Red Dog lager. Former NFL 1st round draft pick Tommy Maddox started at quarterback for the Red Dogs during their final season in 2000. Maddox would later return to the NFL for five more seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2001-2005) and earned that league’s Comeback Player-of-the-Year Award in 2002 along with a Super Bowl championship ring.

The New Jersey Gladiators were an Arena Football League promotion that competed for two poorly attended seasons at the old Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands in 2001 and 2002. The franchise was previously known as the Red Dogs from 1997 thru 2000, named thru a sponsorship with the briefly popular beer brand of the late 1990’s.

The New Jersey Rockets were a One-Year Wonder in the Major Indoor Soccer League who played the winter of 1981-82 at the newly opened Brendan Byrne Arena at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford. One challenge for the Rockets was the presence of another indoor soccer team at the Brendan Byrne Arena that winter – the mighty New York Cosmos of the rival North American Soccer League.
