Kansas City Comets (2001-2005)

This second version of indoor soccer’s Kansas City Comets that ran from 2001 to 2005 was an attempted brand revival of the wildly popular club of the same name that ruled Kansas City winters during the early 1980’s. This franchise was actually better known as the Kansas City Attack and had a nice long run of its own during the 1990’s. The attempt to capitalize on nostalgia for the original Comets fizzled and the Attack/new Comets closed up shop after 14 seasons in 2005.

Kansas City Attack

The Attack, who patrolled Kemper Arena (and briefly Municipal Auditorium) from 1991 to 2001, never recaptured the wild popularity enjoyed by Kansas City’s previous indoor soccer team, the Comets. At the peak of Comets mania during the mid-1980’s, the team routinely packed Kemper Arena and helped drive the NBA’s less popular Kings out of town. The Attack could never claim such influence, but they did ultimately last just as long as the Comets (10 seasons) and they accomplished something the Comets never could: winning a league championship (twice, in fact).
