The Long Island Bulls were a minor league football outfit that played two seasons at Hofstra University in 1969 and 1970. The Bulls were part of the burgeoning sports empire of Roy Boe, who also owned the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association and would later secure the New York Islanders NHL expansion franchise for Long Island in 1971.

New York United

New York United were a men’s 2nd Division soccer club that played in the American Soccer League in 1980 and 1981. The club previously played on Long Island from 1973 until 1979 where it was known as New York Apollo. New ownership bought the team in 1980 and tried to make a splash by signing former Manchester City star Rodney Marsh as Manager and moving into Shea Stadium in Queens. United moved to Downing Stadium on Randall’s Island for their final season in 1981.

New York Sentinels

An especially flaccid entry in the ill-conceived United Football League (2009-2012).  The New York Sentinels went 0-6 in their only season of competition and never scored more than one touchdown in a game. The team only played one contest in their titular home state of New York during their brief lifespan. 4-time NFL All-Pro defensive end Simeon Rice was the Sentinels’ biggest name. But the team’s best name was leading receiver Craphonso Thorpe.

1984 New York Nationals program from the United Soccer League

New York Nationals

The New York Nationals were a very short-lived Long Island-based entry in the lower division United Soccer League. The club existed for only one season in the summer of 1984. The Nationals set up shop at Hofstra University on Long Island, which was previously home to the early (pre-Pele) days of the NASL’s New York Cosmos in the early 1970’s and to the American Soccer League’s New York Apollo in the late 1970’s.
