Pittsburgh Phantoms (1994)

The Pittsburgh Phantoms were a one-and-done professional roller hockey promotion that played at the Civic Arena during the summer of 1994. The club was owned by Pittsburgh Penguins owner Howard Baldwin and had a heavy Pens flavor, featuring former NHLers Bryan Trottier, Warren Young and Alain Lemieux (older brother of Mario) on the roster. Former Penguins star Rick Kehoe coached the team, which performed well and reached the Roller Hockey International playoff quarterfinals. But the team disbanded after one season due to Baldwin’s unhappiness with the league’s management.

Binghamton Whalers American Hockey League

Binghamton Whalers

The Baby Whalers came on the scene in 1980 when the NHL’s Hartford Whalers acquired Binghamton’s previous American Hockey League club, the Broome Dusters, and re-branded the team.  During the 1989-90 season, Binghamton was historically awful.  The Whalers’ 11-60-9 record ranked as the worst winning percentage in AHL history at the time.  After that dreadful season, the New York Rangers replaced Hartford as Binghamton’s parent organization.  The team was re-branded as the Binghamton Rangers for the 1990-91 AHL season.

1995 Pittsburgh Stingers Media Guide from the Continental Indoor Soccer League

Pittsburgh Stingers

The Pittsburgh Stingers were part of a brief attempt by Pittsburgh Penguins owner Howard Baldwin to create a year-round team sports & entertainment operation out of Pittsburgh Civic Arena, using the organizational infrastructure of the Penguins.  At the same time Baldwin entered the Stingers in the Continental Indoor Soccer League in the summer of 1994, he also launched the Pittsburgh Phantoms of Roller Hockey International.  Both the Stingers and the Phantoms filled empty summer dates at the Civic Arena. During this same time period, Baldwin also produced his first Hollywood film – the big-budget Jean-Claude Van Damme thriller “Sudden Death” –  in which the Muscles from Brussels battles terrorists in the Civic Arena during the Stanley Cup Finals.
