Background
The Ohio Mixers were a short-lived minor league basketball team in the Continental Basketball Association (1978-2009). The team was based in Lima, Ohio (pop. 40,000), the second smallest city in the nationwide league after Bangor, Maine. The Mixers played their home games at a local high school gym.
Minor league cult legend Billy Ray Bates, who emerged from CBA anonymity to carry the Portland Trailblazers on his back during the 1980 NBA playoffs, played briefly for the Mixers during the 1983-84 season. Another notable player was Wes Matthews, the #14 overall pick in the 1980 NBA draft who played for five NBA teams between 1980 and 1990. Matthews played for the Mixers during a short period of NBA unemployment in the 1983-84 season.
Following their second and final season in Lima, new investors bought the team and moved it to Cincinnati in May 1984, where the club became known as the Cincinnati Slammers.
Trivia
The Mixers took their name from owner Tom Sawyer’s concrete and asphalt paving business.
