Los Angeles Blades (1993-1997)

The Los Angeles Blades were a professional Roller Hockey (inline skating) franchise owned by Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss and run by his daughter Jeanie Buss. The Blades’ arch rivals, both geographically and competitively, were the Anaheim Bullfrogs. Anaheim eliminated Los Angeles in the Murphy Cup playoffs in all five seasons of the Blades’ existence.

Los Angeles Toros

The Los Angeles Toros were a One-Year Wonder in the start-up National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) in 1967. The team was part of a soccer war between the NPSL and another 1967 start-up, the United Soccer Association (USA). Both leagues placed franchises into the L.A. Memorial Coliseum in the spring of 1967. The Toros, owned by L.A. Rams owner Dan Reeves, fought for fans and prime dates against the USA’s Los Angeles Wolves, backed by L.A. Lakers and Kings chief Jack Kent Cooke.

Los Angeles Stars (1968-1970)

The Los Angeles Stars basketball team was a short-lived effort by the American Basketball Association to plant its flag in L.A. during the early years of its rivalry with the National Basketball Association.  The Stars labored in the shadows of the NBA’s Lakers and never established a substantial following. Coached by Hall-of-Famer (and future Lakers coach) Bill Sharman, the Stars did enjoy a thrilling Cinderella playoff run at the end of their second and final season in L.A.
