The Springfield Fame was a minor league basketball outfit that played two summer seasons in Western Massachusetts in 1985 and 1986. Springfield is the host city of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, which inspired the team’s name. Future NBA All-Star guard Michael Adams and female star Nancy Lieberman both played for the Fame during the team’s brief existence.

Springfield’s long-running American Hockey League franchise was known as the Indians by generations of Western Massachusetts hockey fans between 1926 and 1994. The exception was a span of eight seasons between 1967 and 1975 when the team took on the name ‘Kings’, following the contentious exile of the club’s iron-fisted ruler, Eddie Shore. The NHL’s Los Angeles Kings owned the Springfield club outright during these years and helped produce several outstanding future NHL stars, including Butch Goring and Billy Smith. The team changed its name back to the Indians midway through the 1974-75 season after Eddie Shore regained control of the club.

The New England Blizzard were a popular women’s basketball entry in the short-lived American Basketball League, an early rival to the WNBA.  Despite finishing in last place in two of their three seasons, New England led the ABL in attendance every year, while splitting home games between Hartford and Springfield.
