Background
The original Quad City Angels were a long-time Class A farm club of the California Angels based in Davenport, Iowa. This first version of the Q-C Angels played 17 seasons from 1962 until 1978.
Key players to spend time in Quad City during the first Angels era included:
- Pitcher Dave LaRoche (Quad City ’67-’68)
- Pitcher Frank Tanana (Quad City ’72)
- Infielder Jerry Remy (Quad City ’73)
- First Baseman Willie Aikens (Quad City ’75)
- Infielder Carney Lansford (Quad City ’76)
- Shortstop Dickie Thon (Quad City ’76)
- Second Baseman Alan Wiggins (Quad City ’78).
Future Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon played for the club as a 22-year old in 1976.
The Angels won Midwest League titles in 1968 and 1971.
Angels to Cubs & Back Again
In 1979, the ball club shifted Major League affiliations to the Chicago Cubs. The team was known as the Quad City Cubs from 1979 through 1984. California then returned for a second tour as parent club from 1985 to 1991. The Quad City Angels identity returned for those seasons. In Memoriam
Alan Wiggins (Quad City ’78) died of AIDS on January 6, 1991. Wiggins was the first Major League player reported to have died of the disease.
