Los Angeles Blades (1993-1997)

The Los Angeles Blades were a professional Roller Hockey (inline skating) franchise owned by Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss and run by his daughter Jeanie Buss. The Blades’ arch rivals, both geographically and competitively, were the Anaheim Bullfrogs. Anaheim eliminated Los Angeles in the Murphy Cup playoffs in all five seasons of the Blades’ existence.

1993 Continental Indoor Soccer League Media Guide

L.A. United

L.A. United was a One-Year Wonder in the Continental Indoor Soccer League in 1993.  The club was owned by Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss and was in some ways a re-boot of the Los Angeles Lazers, the indoor soccer team run by Dr. Buss and his son Johnny for seven seasons during the 1980’s. While the Buss family showed enormous patience with the Lazers, this was not the case with United. After one last place season with dreadful attendance, the franchise was packed off to Anaheim under new ownership in 1994.

Los Angeles Lazers

The Los Angeles Lazers were an indoor soccer franchise owned by Dr. Jerry Buss for seven seasons from 1982 to 1989.  Dr. Buss also owned the Los Angeles Lakers, the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, and The Forum, the arena shared by all three teams during the winter.  The Lazers name and purple/yellow color scheme were a riff/brand extension on the Lakers identity.

1974 Los Angeles Aztecs Media Guide from the North American Soccer League

Los Angeles Aztecs

The Aztecs were L.A.’s sporadically glam soccer club of the 1970’s.  The club won the North American Soccer League championship in their expansion season of 1974.  At various times, the Aztecs had ties to everyone from George Best to Elton John to the Dutch midfield genius Johan Cruyff.  But the club also bounced from one ill-fitting stadium to another every year or two and suffered from revolving door ownership.
